New Year Update

Steve Maas, Friday, 1 January 2021

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

It seems like the virus hasn’t left us in peace yet, but we are hoping that 2021 will progress more smoothly than 2020.

In the interests of public safety, the club has been closed since 18th December and we are awaiting news from the Government about when we may be able to open again.

At this morning’s press briefing, Gladys Berejiklian stated that, barring unexpected changes today, the Government is likely to announce the easing of the current restrictions on the southern zone of the Northern Beaches Local Council Area tomorrow. This will (hopefully) mean that we can expect to be back very soon to where we were before this latest Northern Beaches outbreak started.

We will notify you as soon as a decision is made by the Board regarding the opening of the club and the re-commencement of Social Bowls and roll-ups/practice.

In the meantime, here are a few points to take note of:

  1. Zone Fours (Open, Senior and Reserve):

ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED AT THE CLUB BY 5.00pm ON WED 13th JANUARY 2021 TO ALLOW US TO ENTER BEFORE THE ZONE DEADLINE (if you can’t get to the club to enter your team on the entry sheet, you can email me the team details - names and positions in team - and I will make sure your entry goes in)

  • Rounds 1 and 2 to be played on Saturday 6th February at 8.40am and 1.00pm
  • Rounds 3 and 4 to be played on Sunday 7th February at 8.40am and 1.00pm
  • Post Sectional play on Saturday 13th February
  • Spare Day on Sunday 14th February
  1. Zone Pairs (Open, Senior and Reserve):

ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED AT THE CLUB BY 5.00pm ON WED 27th JANUARY 2021 TO ALLOW US TO ENTER BEFORE THE ZONE DEADLINE (if you can’t get to the club to enter your team on the entry sheet, you can email me the team details - names and positions in team - and I will make sure your entry goes in)

  • Rounds 1 and 2 to be played on Saturday 20th February at 8.40am and 1.00pm
  • Rounds 3 and 4 to be played on Sunday 21st February at 8.40am and 1.00pm
  • Post Sectional play on Saturday 27th February
  • Spare Day on Sunday 28th February
  1. Please note that the full 2021 Men’s and Women’s Club programs are now on this website. The ‘Home’ page will show you the events for the next four weeks in the ‘EVENTS” column, but if you click on the ‘Calendar’ button beneath the events, you will see the entire year’s program.

We look forward to seeing you all back in the club and on the greens as soon as possible. In the meantime, stay safe and let’s hope both the virus and the weather situations improve rapidly.

All the best for ’21,

Bulls Committee

Christmas Bowls 2020

Steve Maas, Saturday, 12 December 2020

50 full time and 4 part time players joined us for a fun afternoon in sunny, but windy conditions. Special welcome was extended to our regular, and not so regular, players plus Lyn Gray, Jerry Schmidt, Chris Wood, Len Jenkins, John Cosentino, Herb Smith and David Levy.

We played on 9 rinks of triples, playing in 6 games of 4 ends in rotation with the odd numbered teams staying on their rink and the even team rotating. It was pleasing to see bowlers dress up in Christmas gear and a fun time being had by all.

Wine vouchers were issued to the following winners;

  • Team with most ends won: Barry Rose, David Peart & John Elphick.
  • Team with highest shots scored overall: Bob Leonard, Doug Murphy and Ken Alderton.
  • Player with 1st toucher: Brad Franklin.
  • Player with 1st jack and bowl in the ditch: Bob Cunneen.
  • Best dressed: David Peart.
  • The lucky team draw went to Brian Butler, Les Firman and Kevin Bettman.

We thank our organizing team of Rody, John and Bob. After a bit of a stressful morning on Selection, they arranged a very successful afternoon.

A little fine tuning of arrangements may be made for next year, but it was voted a good afternoon of fun involving mixing up our players.

2020 Club Fours

2020 Club Fours Champions Julie Baker, Billie Maas, Graham Hartmann and Tony Taylor

Steve Maas, Saturday, 12 December 2020

We made a little bit of Belrose Bowling Club history today with two women in the team that won the 2020 Club Fours as well as two women in the runners-up team.

Congratulations to Julie Baker, Billie Maas, Graham Hartmann and Tony Taylor who defeated Dale Nuttall, Sarah Cormio, Rody Manning and Billy Johnson 19-10 in the final of the 2020 Club Fours.

The game was played in cooler conditions with a stiff southerly breeze making for challenging bowls. It was a low scoring game as well as a serious arm wrestle in the first half, with the scores tied at 2-all after 4 ends, 6-all after 10 ends and then 7-all after 12ends. At that point Tony's team started to slowly pull ahead and Billy team were stuck on 7 for several ends. The last two ends were shared 3 apiece.

The quality of the bowls by all the players was outstanding. A great competition overall.

2020 Minor Singles

2020 Minor Singles Champion Michael Rawlings

Steve Maas, Saturday, 5 December 2020

Congratulations to Michael Rawlings who has won this year's Minor Singles in a fascinating game against Club Belrose Manager and novice bowler, John Cormio. It must be in the genes and we look forward to greater outcomes from Michael over the years (and John as well, who played the competition extremely well).

John was down 18-1 and it looked like it was all over, however with a bit of encouragemnt from the crowd, John 'dug deep' and started fighting back. He eventually lost 25-14. It was a great fight back as he put a lot of pressure on Michael - but Michale was up to it..

Congratulations to all the entrants who played in the new Round-Robin Sectional format.

2020 Club Pairs

Steve Maas, Saturday, 24 October 2020

Congratulations to Steve (Lowie) Lowe and James (Brownie) Brown who defeated Andy (Mouse) Townsend and Mike (Doc) Smith 23 - 17 in the Club Major Pairs Final today in very tough, wet conditions. It was a huge game and was touch-and-go as to who would win right up to the last couple of ends.

Lowie and Brownie got off to a flying start to be 9-1 up after 5 ends but Mouse and Doc pegged them back to make it 13 all after 17 ends. At that stage the rain was getting very heavy and the game was wide open. End 18 saw 3 shots to Brownie but in the next end Doc picked up 4 shots so after 19 ends it was Doc leading 17-16. The last 2 ends went Brownie's way with a 5 on the 20th end and a 2 on the final end. It was a great contest.

It was a great match to Live Stream despite the heavy rain and generally poor weather. If you want to see a repeat just check it out on this Bulls Facebook page.

Congratulations to all four guys for a great contest.

Steve now has the CoCC Double, being also our Club Singles Champion.

Looking forward to the Champion of Club Champions (CoCC) coming up over the next two weekends.
