Michael Harvey, Saturday, 28 April 2012

Michelle Treadwell of Belrose W.B.C. was selected by Karen Murphy as the most prominent up and coming bowler at the recent North Side Women’s Weekend Triples.

Michelle’s prize was a personal coaching lesson with Karen. Michelle asked Karen if it was possible to do a group coaching session. Karen obliged to the delight of the Belrose Women Bowlers and this was arranged to follow her personal session today at Belrose BC. Karen was very informative with bowls strategies, techniques and skill drills. The Belrose Ladies all commented how enjoyable and beneficial Karen’s bowls clinic was for them. North Shore bowlers and public show support for McGrath Foundation

It’s been a busy few weeks for five north shore clubs as they coordinate efforts to promote bowls to the public and at the same time fundraise for the McGrath Foundation.

Anyone wishing to support the cause and try bowls this coming weekend, can attend bowling clubs at Belrose (Saturday 18th Feb at 10am) and Gordon (Saturday 18th Feb 10am to 2pm) who are open their doors to the public.

These events come on the back of the success of the Neutral Bay Club’s efforts on 22nd Jan which had over 150 people attend and contribute over $10,000 in support of McGrath Foundation. The Club donated its trading profits from the day and even their staff donated their day’s wages.  Asquith also had success last weekend with their open day with their enthusiastic volunteers working hard last week.

Coordinating the collective of clubs are Michael Andersch and Dennis Taylor for our Zone.  Michael said “Our approach of combining fundraising with the promotion of lawn bowls to the public is a fresh step.  Clubs have tended to do the two things separately in the past.  By inviting the public to try the game as a fun social activity with family and friends, with a fundraising cause behind it strengthens the bond of our clubs to their local community and hopefully raises participation”.  You only need consider the growing popularity of local events such as the Cole Classic or Oxfam Trail Walk to identify a strengthening bond between sporting activities with a community cause to encourage public participation.

The McGrath Foundation raises money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia and increase breast cancer awareness in young women.  It’s a busy time for the foundation staff this weekend as across Australia over 800 cricket clubs are holding pink stumps days.

Michael and Dennis have ambitions the approach taken locally will expand across many more clubs, even across Australia.  Many bowlers want Bowls Australia to mandate a single dedicated day nationally for all clubs to open their doors to the public, supported by a national advertising campaign.  They have learned however that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and intend lobbying through Bowls NSW for progressive change.

Belrose Greens Ready for Play January 2012

Belrose's Legend Greenkeeper Joe Saragozza
Joe finishing touches to new No.1 Green Tiffy January 2012
Michael Harvey, Tuesday, 31 January 2012

Belrose have all 3 Greens ready for play by the end of January for the 2012 Bowls Season.

Legendary Greenkeeper Joe Saragozza has done a magnificent job in having all 3 greens at Belrose ready to play by the end of January. Strategic Planning, management and scheduling combined with sheer hard work has Joe proudly overseeing his greens with ever reliable helping hand Bob Petrovich. Belrose bowlers are eager to play on the new No.1 Tiftdwarf Grass Green.

Joe modestly said “This new Tiffy is the best I have ever prepared and the levels are perfect. It could be the best Tiffy around or played on …. ”

Pennants (Belrose with 9 Pennants Teams in 2012) Starts in early March and Bowlers have the luxury of playing on either of the 2 Tiffy’s or the Couch Grass Green.

Congratulations Joe – The Greens are a credit to you and we appreciate all your hard work.

2012 Mens Club Fours Champions

2012 Belrose Mens Fours Champions
Matt Blackburn, Daniel Reilly, Peter Shlager and Greg Alder
Michael Harvey, Sunday, 29 January 2012

A match winning last bowl victory clinched the 2012 Club Fours Final at Belrose BC this afternoon.

The 2012 Men’s Season opening Championship was full of strong teams and in particular it was great to see many new bowlers who joined Belrose in 2012 entering the Fours Championship.

The 2012 Men’s Fours Championship came down to the very last bowl.

With the score 16 – 17 on the last end and being 6 shots down at the head - with seemingly no where to make 2 Shots to win, Matt Blackburn played and magnificent conversion shot under enormous pressure to trail the Jack back to one of his only  2 bowls behind the head. What a shot!

Silence prevailed as all the players looked stunned; the crowd hung anxiously waiting on the result and then big smiles beamed from Greg Alder, Peter Shlager and Dan Reilly as they congratulated and celebrated with Skip Matt Blackburn confirming 2 shots, for a last bowl 1 shot Victory to Win the 2012 Belrose Men’s Fours Championship.  Congratulations boys a great win and significantly pleasing is that Greg has just returned to bowls after many years absent, Peter and Dan have recently joined the Club for 2012 and Matt is in his Second year at Belrose.

A close and fitting Championship Final and well done to the Runners Up Peter Muir, Lachlan Sturrock, Michael Harvey and Brad Franklin backing up from a morning Semi Final victory on a great game.

Crawford Linton named 2011 Zone 9 Bowler of the Year

Crawford Linton - 2011 Zone Bowler of the Year
Michael Harvey, Tuesday, 15 November 2011

Crawford Linton was last night named as the Zone 9 Bowler of the Year. Crawford was presented with the Jim Hall Trophy by Zone 9 President Bob Moran at a ceremony this evening.

This was the 4th win of this award by Crawford - he won it last year and prior to that in 1999 and 2001 when the award was made on a District, not Zone basis. It adds to the many achievements over his long bowling career - at State level as well as for the Zone.

This award is based on a points system, with points awarded to all bowlers for their performance at Zone and State Championships. His win this year is the result of his winning the Zone 9 Senior Singles (for the second time), being part of the team who won the Zone Fours Championship, a semi-finalist in the Zone Champion of Champions Singles and a quarter-finalist in the State Senior Singles.

Runner-up this year was Belrose player Nathan Wise.

Belrose Representative Players - 2011 Zone 9 State Inter-Zone Side

Michael Harvey, Monday, 29 August 2011

7 Belrose Bowlers will represent Zone 9 in the NSW State Inter-Zone Competition. Each year Zone 9 play several Inter-zone matches, all are important, but none so much as the Inter-Zone Sides Championship in which all 16 NSW Zones compete.

This year it is being held at Nelson Bay & Soldiers Point Bowling Clubs from 9th to 11th September. Last year in atrocious conditions a loss to Zone 10 (Event Winner), cost Zone 9 a Finals spot, a disappointment as in 2009 we were the runners-up to Zone 12.

This years draw has Zone 9 playing Zones 5,8 &11 in the sectional rounds.

This years side:
Brad Langelaar (Dee Why), Rod Hummelstad (Mona Vale), Steve Clark & John Campton (both Belrose)
Matt Blackburn (Belrose), Jamien Lewis (North Sydney), Crawford Linton & Cy Threfall (both Belrose)
Dave Baker (Harbord), Michael Harvey (Belrose), Brad Franklin (both North Sydney) & Nathan Wise (Belrose)
Jake Homer (Mona Vale), Scott Sheppard, Jonathon Pollard & Steve Rawlings (All Harbord)
Reserve George Appleby (Asquith)

Side Manager is President Bob Moran.

2011 Rookie Pairs Finalists

2011 Rookie Pairs Finalists
Mike "The Gift" Conquest & Adam "Moods" Moody
Michael Harvey, Sunday, 21 August 2011

The St Ives combination of Richard Hunt & Bob Leonard have won the 2011 Rookie Pairs Competition by defeating our Belrose team of Adam Moody & Mike Conquest 15 shots to 10 in the final played at Warringah BC today.

Earlier in the day, the boy's won their Semi Final 11 - 6 against the home team (Warringah) of Nick Skipper & Stu Everson (with Stu the lead in the winning Rookie Pairs team last year).

The Rookie Competition is very cut throat with no margin for error. Each match is played over only 12 ends. The other point of difference from the normal 2x2x2x2 Pairs format is that this Pairs competition is played by the International Pairs format - 3 Bowl Pairs. The leads each play their 3 bowls alternatively and then the Skips playing their 3 Bowls alternatively. Well done boy's ..... an awesome effort and achievement.

Club President Andy Little reports ..

Today we (Belrose Touring Bowlers) had our annual Match against Cabramatta BC (CBC), an annual event that commenced back in 1982, and it was our Club's turn to visit CBC.
Belrose values their long time association with CBC, and usually attend their annual Presidents & officers day held in June.
48 players and 4 supporters travelled by coach to CBC and were met on arrival , entertained and had a fantastic game of bowls with CBC Men's, Ladies, Premier League and No 1 Pennant players.
Prior to this day, the Trophy was won by each Club 11 times. Unfortunately the day was won by CBC and both CBC President John Binnie and General Manager Barry Watkins through down the challenge to "Belrose" for their visit to Belrose in 2012 to have involvement of top grade players .
Yes, we need to win back the trophy.
Overall a great day enjoyed by all.
