Harbord's Terry Warder continued a fantastic run of form with a hard-fought 31/29 victory over Steve Gliddon (Belrose) in this afternoon's Final of the 2018 Zone 9 Champion of Club Champion Singles.

Played in blustery conditions on Harbord BC's slick No.2 green, Terry was out of the blocks quickest before Steve found his rhythm and the match settled into a challenging battle with both players regularly producing quality bowls to snatch the shot away from their opponent.  A full score of 4 on one end by Steve late in the match caused a few nervous moments but Terry was able to close out the match when a terrific bowl by Steve finished just out of bounds when drawing to a jack near the boundary.

Terry now qualifies for the State CoCC Singles Finals to be held at Ballina BC from 4-5th October.

Congratulations to both Terry and Steve for a worthy Final.

In the morning's semi-finals, Terry beat Sean Semler (Balgowlah) 31/21 while Steve accounted for John Campton (Asquith) 31/25.

Jack Harkness 2018 success for Bulls

Belrose Bulls
Steve Maas, Saturday, 11 August 2018

The Jack Harkness Memorial Invitational Tournament is an annual event played at Mosman Bowling Club. It is in it's 38th year and is a Fours knockout event with 16 teams from Zone 9 clubs, all players must be Grade 6 or 7 Pennants grading.

The Bulls team of Rody Manning, Doug Murphy, Ken Alderton, & John Tomlinson played Willoughby Park in the first round and they got off to a flyer however as often happens in bowls, Willoughby Park fought back and caught up to level the scores at 12-12. Our big break came when the bell rang for afternoon tea. Everyone stopped play. The Mosman silverware was out for cups of tea plus scones (already spread with jam & cream) and we are reliably informed that our guys were very restrained and only had the odd scone or two - maybe more but who was counting!

Back to the game - the scones were a bit heavy for Willoughby Park slowing them down however our team were revived by the afternoon tea and all played much better. The Bulls ran out winner by 23-13 without playing the last end (it must have been the scones that helped).

On Saturday 25th August the round 2 field is down to 8 teams and we are drawn to play Lindfield Rollers.

Go Bulls and good luck to the guys!

We had only four entries in our Novice Singles this year but it was a quality field. The "Richards" playing the "Peters"! In the end, the honours went to Richard Lewis who defeated Peter Newland 21 - 7.

Congratulations to all the entrants. This is a must-do event for all novice bowlers and we look forward to more bowlers with less than 3 years experience fight it out again next year.

Zone 9 Senior Singles Champion
Steve Maas, Sunday, 5 August 2018

The 2018 Zone 9 Senior Singles Final was a Bulls only affair - Craw vs TT was a match that was always going to be one of the"'best ever".

Their weight control on the slick greens was a feature of the game. As well as demonstrating their superb drawing abilities, both players also resorted to running at the head when the chips were down with 12 ends killed.

In the end Craw won 31 - 30 and it was a shame that someone had to lose.

Congrats to both players for a great bowling exhibition.

Rex Johnston Pairs 2018

Winners - Section A

Steve Maas, Tuesday, 31 July 2018

Once again the Rex Johnston Prestige Pairs tournament was played in excellent conditions. The greens were in perfect condition (as usual) thanks to the hard work of club green keeper Joe Saragozza and his helpers. The tournament ran over two days with Day 1 sorting out the teams into three Sections for play on Day 2. There was an open draw each day and all points earned on Day 1 were reset to zero for the start of Day 2 so everyone had a chance of winning some prize money. All 8 teams in Section A as well as 6 of the 8 teams in Section B and the top 5 teams in Section C would all win prize money and with $6,000 in total up for grabs it was always going to be serious competition.

Brad Landi (Avalon) and Ral Lewis (North Sydney) took the honours on Day 1 with 4 wins and a margin of 43. Bob Hawtree (Turramurra) and Aaron Jarosz (Coogee) were a very close second also with 4 wins and a margin of 39. It was very tight at the top with third place going to the Steve Jessop and Paul Rowe (Grandviews) with 4 wins, a margin of 39 but with 4 fewer ends won than Aaron Jarosz!

On Day 2 all the points were reset and all teams had a chance at the prize money. The field was divided into three sections based on their results on Day 1 and the competition was fierce at the top.

In Section A, the winners were Jack Boulden and Grant Schuberg from Taren Point with 4 wins and a 32 shot margin to take out the big prize. They were the only team in Section A to win all four games on Day 2. The runners-up were Alvin Gardiner and Blake Signal (from NZ via Nelson Bay) with 3 wins and a 12 shot margin.

In Section B, the winners were Craig Scott and John Green (Engadine / Taren Point) with 3 wins and a 4 shot margin. The runners-up were Andy Townsend and Paul Somers (Dee Why) with 2 wins, 1 draw and a 20 shot margin.

In Section C, the winners were Adam Moody and Stuart McLeod (Mona Vale) with 4 wins and a 57 shot margin. The runners-up were Al Lewin and Phil Westcott (Ettalong) with 4 wins and a 42 shot margin.

The full results sheets are shown below along with photos of the winners and runner-up in each section.

We would like to thank all teams for participating in the event as well as the green keeping staff and many volunteers who gave up their time to make the event as successful as it was.

Belrose Girls Dominate at Region 15 Finals

Steven Maas, Friday, 27 July 2018

Congratulations to all the Belrose girls in the teams playing at this weeks Region 15 finals down at Mona Vale. In a week of superb bowling conditions, Belrose girls took out the Pairs, Triples, Senior Fours and were runners-up in the Singles and Senior Pairs. What a great achievement.

In the Senior Fours, Lorraine Hazzard, Margaret Murphy, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan overcame a slow start to defeat the Harbord team of Lorraine Belling, Barbara Green, Robyn Kennedy and Chris Gordon in a dramatic final end, 23-21.
In the Open Pairs, Michelle Treadwell and Billie Maas defeated the Seaforth pair of Jo Freeman and Trish Eckford 26-9.
In the Senior Pairs, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan went down by one shot to Susan Laidlaw and Barbara Green (Harbord) 17-18.
In the Triples, Margaret Murphy, Daphne Menzies and Billie Maas defeated Pittwater 33-8.
In the Singles, Virginia Longfellow of Harbord played superb bowls to prevail over Patricia Tan.

From the 6 Regionals matches this week, 3 were won by teams from North Shore and 3 from Manly-Warringah. Well done everyone!

Make sure you get down to the NSW State Championships which are being held at Taren Point between 3rd and 11th September to support our girls!

2018 Pennant Finals Wrap-up

Belrose Bulls
Steve Maas, Sunday, 22 July 2018

The weather was perfect for this year's Zone 9 Pennant finals. Belrose was contesting both Grade 2 and Grade 6 which was a huge improvement our our position at this time last year. Our Grade 1s are also in the State finals but that is on 17, 18, 19 August.

The Grade 2 final was a knockout match against Pittwater Pelicans and it was never going to be easy. The Bulls started our strongly and worked their way to a 9 shot lead after 26 ends. It was neck to neck from here on as the Pelicans closed the gap and after 42 ends the two Sides were equal on 37 shots each. From that point on, the Pelicans surged and the Bulls could not quite keep up. The final score was Bulls 53, Pelicans 61. Congraulations to both teams on a great match.

The Grade 6 final was played as a round robin contest with three teams competeing for the flag - Belrose, Harbord and Mosman. Belrose went down to a strong Harbord Side by 11 shots on Saturday afternoon however they managed to win against Mosman on Sunday morning in an extremely tight match with only two shots seperating the Sides after 62 ends. Mosman also went down to Harbord on Sunday afternoon giving Harbord the flag with Belrose runners-up.

A great peformance by both the Bulls Sides, well done!

Women's District Triples Champions 2018
Billie Maas, Wednesday, 18 July 2018

Margaret Murphy, Daphne Menzies and Billie Maas are the North Shore District Triples Champions for 2018, adding a fifth District trophy to the haul already in our cabinet this year.

The ladies began their campaign on Mosman greens on Monday against a fellow Belrose team skipped by Eleanor Swain. All of them took some time to warm up to the extremely cold conditions, but Billie’s team eventually pulled away to a 25-12 win. In the afternoon they were against a Mosman team; however, by then our players had the measure of the green and posted a win by the same margin, 26-13.

On Tuesday they came out firing on the Warrawee greens to overcome strong opposition from a home team skipped by Joy Beattie (the 2015 District Champions). Our girls kept up the pressure to prevail 19-11. In the afternoon, they took control of the match against Emma Brown’s team from North Sydney from the outset and ran away to a 21-6 victory.

Then came the final on Wednesday morning against a Neutral Bay team of Dawn Spinks, Brenda Walker & Gill Barton. The Forestville green had been predicted to be very quick, and it was, making it hard for the players to continue the consistently good form they’d displayed at other venues over the previous four rounds. It was a game in which great patience was required, and the scores over the first half dozen ends were restricted to singles. However, by the 13th end the Belrose combination had inched out to a 13-8 lead; then a run of ends in their favour saw them consolidate their position, eventually claiming the match 22-11.

Needless to say, the girls are all very excited --  Margaret Murphy has been bowling for less than a year and is now in the happy position of finding herself with two District championships to her name, having played second for Patricia Tan in the Senior Fours. For Daphne, one of our most consistent bowlers, this was her first District win and a great way to finish her bowling career at our club (she and her husband David are relocating to Mollymook around the end of the year). And for Billie, it is her second North Shore trophy for 2018, having won the Open Pairs with Michelle Treadwell.

With this being the last District championship of the year, that makes the trophy count 5 out of 6 for Belrose (and 6 out of 6 finals, with Eleanor Swain’s team being the runners-up to Turramurra in the Open Fours). What a great year for the club!

Next week, all our District Champions will take on the Manly-Warringah District winners at the Region 15 Play-Offs to be held at Mona Vale, with trial ends at 10am each day. The schedule of play is:

Tuesday 24th July:  Open Fours & Senior Fours (Lorraine Hazzard, Margaret Murphy, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan).

Wednesday 25th July:  Open Pairs (Michelle Treadwell & Billie Maas) & Senior Pairs  (Benita Andrews & Patricia Tan)

Thursday 26th July:  Triples (Margaret Murphy, Daphne Menzies & Billie Maas) & Singles  (Patricia Tan)

We held the final of our club Fours today in cold but excellent conditions. Due to delays in playing the match Peter Muir was unavailable and Michael Mastroianni substituted on the day.

Congratulations to Alan Hansen, Peter Muir (sub Michael Mastroianni), Sean Crowe-Maxwell and Steve Gliddon who had a comprehensive win against John Treadwell, Richard Wise, Crawford Linton and Tony Taylor 27 - 13.

Congratulations to Michelle Treadwell and Billie Maas for winning the Pairs Championship title today. They were too strong on the day for their opponents Sue Vostarek and Lynne Newland and ended up winning 25 - 7. Both teams had comfortably wins in the semis to reach the final.  This gives Michelle and Billie the Club and District Pairs titles. Well done to all.

2018 Club Minor Singles Finals

2018 Minor Singles winner Stuart Jamieson

Steven Maas, Sunday, 1 July 2018

The Minor Singles was held on the rink immediately beside the Major Singles today and was equally exciting. Stuart Jamieson and Steve Mauger had a great match and, just like the Major Singles, it was a shame that someone had to lose.

Stuart got off to a flying start however Steve maintained his composure and kept plugging away. The effort was worth it as he caught Stuart and then took hold of the lead at 27 - 26. Just like the Major Singles match alongside them, these two then fought tooth and nail to gain any advantage and got to 30 all. Stuart was holding match after his last bowl but Steve still had one to play and was not going to lie down and give up. He put down a perfect bowl however, as often happens in bowls, his shot went though the narrowest of gaps and he didn't manage to convert the end allowing Stuart to win.

Congratulations to both players for a top game.

Those of us gathered in the small crowd watching Steve Gliddon and Tony Taylor in the Major Singles final today were treated to one of the best Singles games they are ever likely to see. Steve Gliddon was first out of the blocks and pulled away to a 21 - 13 lead however Tony got into gear and surged to a 28 - 24 lead. Steve fought back to make it 28 all and the last few ends of the match saw some of the tightest bowling you are ever likely to see. It was tied up at 30 all and Tony was holding match with a couple of close bowls. Steve had one bowl left and drew to within inches of the jack to take out the match 31 - 30. It was a shame that someone had to lose.

Congratulations to both players - well done!

Belrose Girls Dominate District Fours in 2018

Steven Maas, Tuesday, 29 May 2018

Congratulations to Lorraine Hazzard, Margaret Murphy, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan who have won the 2018 North Shore District Senior Fours.  Congratulations also to Louise Cook, Denise Levy, Diane Kent and Eleanor Swain who were runners-up in the North Shore District Open Fours. It was great to see Belrose in the final of both the Open and the Senior Fours events.

Belrose has now won four out of the five District Women's Championships this year with Patricia Tan involved in three of them, Benita Andrews in two and Michelle Treadwell and Billie Maas taking out the Open Pairs. The only event outstanding at this stage is the Triples to be played in July.

The Fours final finished in near-darkness with Patricia Tan's team (Belrose) prevailing over Bridget Nelson's team (Turramurra). It was lucky that there was football practice on at the adjacent sporting grounds as their lights provided just enough light for the Open Fours to be completed, with Sue Hamilton's team (Turramurra) defeating Eleanor Swain's team (Belrose).

2018 Club Minor Pairs Finals

Steve Maas, Sunday, 20 May 2018

The Club Minor Pairs finals were played today in perfect conditions. Congratulations to Mick James and Ken Alderton who defeated Riley and Ethan Scott-Branagan 20 - 16 in a very tight match. The score was 3 all after 3 ends, 6 all after 8 ends, 9 all after 12 ends and then 13 all after 17 ends! Unfortunately for Riley and Ethan, the 18th end did not go their way however they won the last 3 ends to close the gap to only 4 shots. It was a game worth watching!

Belrose Girls complete District Pairs 'Double'

Senior Pairs Winners Benita and Patricia
Photograph:Billie Maas
Billie Maas, Wednesday, 28 March 2018

Making it a “Belrose Double” this week, the club’s Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan have claimed the Senior Pairs Championship, only days after another Belrose team took out the Open Pairs event. Benita and Patricia took on Turramurra’s Jan Martin and Jenny Wallis in the final and, from the opening ends, continued the good form they have displayed all week. Benita, in particular, drew close to the jack with her opening bowl on most of the ends, putting their opponents under pressure. Because of this, it took a few ends for Turramurra to get on the scoreboard; once they got underway, Jan and Jenny played some lovely bowls but were frequently taken out again as the Belrose players stretched out their lead to claim the match 21 – 6. (It had been the same story in all their previous rounds — over the four matches, Benita and Patricia conceded an average of only 8 shots per game!)  They will now contest the Region 15 play-off in July.
